UB40 is a British reggae band formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England. The name “UB40” comes from the British unemployment benefit form, UB40. The band’s early lineup consisted of vocalist Ali Campbell, guitarist Robin Campbell, bassist Earl Falconer, keyboardist Mickey Virtue, drummer Jim Brown, percussionist Norman Hassan, and saxophonist Brian Travers. Their music is heavily influenced by reggae but also incorporates elements of pop, rock, and other genres.
UB40 gained international fame with their debut album “Signing Off” in 1980, which featured hits like “Food for Thought” and “King.” Their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Red Red Wine” from their album “Labour of Love” (1983) became their signature song and topped charts worldwide. Other notable hits include “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Kingston Town,” and “I Got You Babe” featuring Chrissie Hynde.
Throughout their career, UB40 has released numerous albums, explored different musical styles, and experienced changes in their lineup. Despite facing challenges and controversies over the years, they remain one of the most iconic reggae bands of all time, with a legacy marked by their distinctive sound and memorable hits.
