The Lumineers: Indie Folk Revivalists with Heartfelt Storytelling
The Lumineers are an American folk-rock band known for their emotionally charged lyrics, stripped-down sound, and foot-stomping energy. Since emerging in the early 2010s, they’ve become one of the most successful acts in the modern folk revival movement, joining the ranks of bands like Mumford & Sons and Of Monsters and Men in bringing acoustic-driven music back into the mainstream.
The band was founded by Wesley Schultz (vocals, guitar) and Jeremiah Fraites (drums, piano) in Ramsey, New Jersey. The two began writing music together in 2005 after the tragic death of Jeremiah’s brother, Josh, who was also Wesley’s best friend. Their shared grief and musical chemistry led to the formation of a creative partnership that would become the foundation of The Lumineers.
Struggling to gain traction on the East Coast, Schultz and Fraites moved to Denver, Colorado, where they found a more welcoming music scene. There, they recruited cellist Neyla Pekarek in 2010, who would remain a key member of the group until her departure in 2018. The trio began gaining attention for their raw, heartfelt performances and a series of homemade YouTube videos.
The Lumineers released their self-titled debut album in 2012, and it became a breakout success. Powered by the massive hit single “Ho Hey”, the album went multi-platinum and earned the band Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album. “Ho Hey” became an anthem for the indie folk genre, with its simple stomp-clap rhythm and anthemic chorus making it a global hit.
Other standout tracks from the debut include:
- “Stubborn Love” – An emotional, powerful song driven by Schultz’s raspy vocals and soaring instrumentation.
- “Submarines” – A quirky, storytelling track with a playful edge.
In 2016, The Lumineers followed up with their second album, Cleopatra, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album solidified their place in the indie-folk world, featuring hits like:
- “Ophelia” – A piano-driven tune with a catchy hook and nostalgic lyrics.
- “Cleopatra” – The title track, telling a poignant story of missed opportunities and the passage of time.
- “Angela” – A fan favorite that showcases their signature blend of tenderness and melody.
Their third album, III, released in 2019, marked a darker, more cinematic turn for the band. It was structured like a three-act play, telling the story of the fictional Sparks family and exploring themes of addiction, loss, and generational trauma. Songs like “Gloria” and “Life in the City” carried deep emotional weight and further proved the band’s growth and ambition as storytellers.
The Lumineers’ core members remain Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, and they continue to tour with a rotating group of supporting musicians. Known for their energetic live shows and minimalist stage setups, the band emphasizes authenticity and connection with their audience.
With their blend of folk tradition, heartfelt lyrics, and modern sensibility, The Lumineers have carved out a unique space in today’s music landscape—reminding listeners that sometimes, the simplest songs can carry the deepest meaning.
