Rema: The Rising Star of Afrobeats

Divine Ikubor, popularly known by his stage name Rema, is a Nigerian singer, rapper, and songwriter whose meteoric rise has redefined the global Afrobeats sound. Born on May 1, 2000, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, Rema grew up in a deeply religious family and started his musical journey performing in church as a teenager. His passion for music and his unique sound would soon capture the world’s attention.

Rema came into the limelight in 2019 after a freestyle video over D’Prince’s track “Gucci Gang” went viral on Instagram. This caught the attention of D’Prince himself, who signed him to Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records. Later that year, he released his self-titled debut EP, Rema, which quickly climbed the charts and introduced the world to his genre-blending style. The standout track “Dumebi” became an instant hit, charting across Africa and gaining international airplay. Its infectious beat and catchy chorus helped solidify Rema as one of Nigeria’s hottest new talents.

Over the years, Rema has created a signature sound he calls “Afrorave,” a subgenre of Afrobeats infused with trap, Indian music influences, and pop elements. His debut album, Rave & Roses, released in 2022, marked a turning point in his career. Featuring hits like “Soundgasm,” “Time N Affection,” and the global sensation “Calm Down,” the album garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. A remix of “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez propelled the track into the international mainstream, breaking records on Spotify and YouTube and peaking on several global charts.

In 2024, Rema released his second studio album, HEIS, which showcased his continued evolution as an artist. The project blended Amapiano, Afrobeats, and other African rhythms, with lyrics sung in multiple languages including Pidgin, Bini, Yoruba, and English. HEIS was both a commercial success and a critical triumph, earning him his first Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Album.

Beyond his music, Rema has become a cultural icon. Known for his fashion-forward style and futuristic visuals, he has been a brand ambassador for global companies like Pepsi. Despite his fame, Rema maintains a relatively low-profile personal life. He has spoken about the loss of his father and brother at a young age, which deeply influenced his music and worldview. A devout Christian, he often reflects on faith and spirituality in his lyrics.

Rema represents a new generation of African artists pushing boundaries and shaping the future of music. With billions of streams,
