Mac DeMarco: The Laid-Back Prince of Indie Rock

Mac DeMarco is a Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer known for his laid-back sound, quirky personality, and lo-fi, jangly guitar-driven style. With a career that blends slacker rock charm and deep emotional introspection, DeMarco has carved out a distinct niche in the world of indie music.

Born Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV on April 30, 1990, in Duncan, British Columbia, DeMarco grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. He began playing music in high school, influenced by a mix of classic rock, new wave, and Japanese pop. After graduating, he moved to Vancouver and later Montreal, trying to make it as a musician while working odd jobs and recording music in his home.

Musical Breakthrough and Style

DeMarco’s first major release came in 2012 with the mini-LP Rock and Roll Night Club, which drew attention for its bizarre blend of crooner-style vocals, tape distortion, and sleazy glam aesthetics. That same year, he released his full-length debut, 2, which featured the now-classic tracks:

  • “Ode to Viceroy” – A smoky, ironic love letter to his favorite brand of cigarettes.
  • “My Kind of Woman” – A dreamy, heartfelt ballad that became a fan favorite.
  • “Freaking Out the Neighborhood” – A catchy tune apologizing to his mom for his wild stage antics.

His sound—a mix of jangly guitar tones, vintage synths, and laid-back vocals—has often been described as “slacker rock,” though DeMarco himself avoids the label. His music is often deeply personal, veering between romantic odes and reflections on mortality, despite the casual tone.

Critical Success and Growth

In 2014, DeMarco released Salad Days, which expanded his fanbase and solidified his place in the indie scene. The title track and songs like “Chamber of Reflection” showed deeper emotional and sonic maturity while retaining his trademark charm.

Subsequent albums include:

  • Another One (2015) – A mini-album full of love songs and soft melodies, ending with DeMarco inviting fans to visit his home in New York (some actually did).
  • This Old Dog (2017) – A more reflective and mellow album that dealt with themes of family and aging.
  • Here Comes the Cowboy (2019) – A sparse, more minimal record that split critical opinion but showcased his willingness to experiment.
  • Five Easy Hot Dogs (2023) – An all-instrumental road-trip album recorded across North America, highlighting his evolving artistry.

Personal Life and Public Image

Mac DeMarco is known as much for his personality as his music. With his goofy sense of humor, gap-toothed grin, and carefree attitude, he’s become a beloved figure in indie circles. Despite his wild stage persona—crowd-surfing, joking around, and even mooning the crowd—he’s introspective in interviews and passionate about his craft.

He’s been in a long-term relationship with Kiera McNally, a graphic designer and artist, and often references her in his love songs. They live a relatively low-key life compared to his on-stage antics.

Legacy

Mac DeMarco has become a defining artist of indie music in the 2010s and beyond. With a loyal fanbase, DIY ethos, and constantly evolving sound, he continues to influence a new generation of musicians while staying true to his unique vision: relaxed, real, and deeply human.
