Junoon: Pioneers of Sufi Rock
Junoon is a Pakistani rock band that revolutionized South Asian music by fusing Western rock with classical Eastern elements, creating a genre now known as “Sufi rock.” Formed in 1990 in Lahore, the band’s name means “obsession” or “passion” in Urdu—an apt description of their intense musical style and cultural impact.
The band was the brainchild of Salman Ahmad, a guitarist and songwriter who had previously played with the popular band Vital Signs. Disillusioned with the mainstream pop scene, Ahmad envisioned a more profound musical expression rooted in spirituality, poetry, and activism.
