John Legend is an acclaimed American singer, songwriter, pianist, and actor known for his smooth, soulful voice and timeless love songs. Born John Roger Stephens on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio, Legend showed musical talent from a young age. He began playing the piano at four and was performing with his church choir by seven. His early exposure to gospel, soul, and R&B would heavily influence his signature sound.
Legend attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied English with a concentration in African-American literature. While in college, he honed his skills by performing at local talent shows, weddings, and campus events. After graduation, he worked as a management consultant while pursuing music on the side, contributing piano and vocals to various artists’ projects, including Lauryn Hill’s hit “Everything Is Everything.”
Legend’s big break came when he met hip-hop producer Kanye West in the early 2000s. West signed him to his label, GOOD Music, and helped produce Legend’s debut album, Get Lifted, released in 2004.
