The band’s origins trace back to the influential all-female rock band The Runaways, which Jett co-founded in the mid-1970s. After The Runaways disbanded in 1979, Joan Jett launched her solo career and formed Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
The Blackhearts initially consisted of Jett on vocals and guitar, along with various supporting musicians. Their breakthrough came with the release of the album “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” in 1981, which featured the iconic title track, a cover of the Arrows’ song. “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” became a massive hit, topping the charts and solidifying Joan Jett’s status as a rock icon.
