Jet: Aussie Rock Revivalists Who Brought Back the Swagger

Jet is an Australian rock band known for their gritty sound, high-energy performances, and retro rock ‘n’ roll vibe that channels the raw power of bands like AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and The Stooges. Bursting onto the scene in the early 2000s, Jet became one of the leading forces in the garage rock revival movement, delivering infectious hooks and a no-nonsense attitude that struck a chord with fans around the world.

The band was formed in Melbourne in 2001 by brothers Nic Cester (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Chris Cester (drums, backing vocals), along with Cameron Muncey (lead guitar, vocals) and Mark Wilson (bass, keyboards). From the beginning, Jet stood out with their stripped-down, riff-heavy approach and classic rock influences, offering a refreshing contrast to the polished pop dominating the charts at the time.

Jet’s debut album, Get Born, released in 2003, was an explosive success. Fueled by the breakout single “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” the album sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide. The track—instantly recognizable with its driving bass line and shout-along chorus—became a global hit and a staple in commercials, films, and video games. Critics compared it to Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life,” and fans loved its raw, energetic throwback style.

Get Born delivered more than just one hit. Other standout tracks include:

  • “Rollover DJ” – A snarky, high-octane track aimed at boring music trends.
  • “Look What You’ve Done” – A Beatles-esque ballad that showed the band’s softer, melodic side.
  • “Cold Hard Bitch” – A heavy, hard-rocking anthem that climbed the Billboard charts and reinforced Jet’s swaggering reputation.

Jet followed up with their second album, Shine On, in 2006. While it didn’t match the commercial success of Get Born, it demonstrated growth and emotional depth, especially with the title track, written as a tribute to the Cester brothers’ father. Songs like “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” and “Rip It Up” kept their rock credentials alive.

In 2009, Jet released their third album, Shaka Rock, featuring tracks like “She’s a Genius” and “Seventeen.” Though it received mixed reviews, it reinforced the band’s commitment to loud, unapologetic rock.

Despite their early success, Jet disbanded in 2012 due to creative differences and burnout. However, they reunited in 2016 to tour with Bruce Springsteen and later played a run of shows celebrating the 15th anniversary of Get Born. The reunion sparked renewed interest in the band, and in 2023, they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, solidifying their place in Australian rock history.

Jet may not have reinvented the wheel, but that was never the point. With gritty guitars, classic hooks, and pure rock ‘n’ roll energy, they delivered a much-needed jolt to the early 2000s music scene—and their legacy continues to fire up playlists and live crowds today.
