Heart is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1973. However, their origin story is intertwined with Vancouver, Canada. The band was initially formed by sisters Ann Wilson (vocals) and Nancy Wilson (guitar) in the mid-1960s in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, Washington. They began performing as “The Army” and later “White Heart” before settling on the name “Heart” after relocating to Vancouver, British Columbia, in the early 1970s.
In Vancouver, the Wilson sisters joined forces with guitarist Roger Fisher, bassist Steve Fossen, and drummer Michael Derosier to form the classic lineup of Heart. The band quickly gained a following in the local music scene and attracted attention for their dynamic performances and powerful rock sound.
Heart released their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” in 1976, which featured the hit singles “Magic Man” and “Crazy on You.” The album’s success propelled Heart to national and international fame, establishing them as one of the leading rock bands of the 1970s.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Heart continued to release successful albums and singles, including “Barracuda,” “Alone,” and “These Dreams.” The band’s sound evolved over the years, blending elements of hard rock, folk, and pop, and showcasing the distinctive vocals and harmonies of the Wilson sisters.
Despite various lineup changes and periods of hiatus, Heart remained a vital force in rock music, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, recognizing their significant contributions to the genre. Today, Heart’s legacy continues to influence generations of musicians and fans alike, cementing their place as one of the most iconic rock bands in history.
