Event Description (Available Tickets Below Video)
Foster the People is an American indie pop and alternative rock band known for their infectious melodies, upbeat anthems, and thoughtful commentary on modern life. The band burst onto the international music scene in the early 2010s, quickly gaining a reputation for blending catchy pop hooks with indie sensibilities and electronic influences.
Formed in 2009 in Los Angeles, California, Foster the People was founded by Mark Foster (vocals, keyboards, guitar). Before starting the band, Foster worked as a commercial jingle writer while pursuing his passion for music. The project came together when Foster teamed up with longtime friend Mark Pontius (drums) and Cubbie Fink (bass). The group began performing in small venues around Los Angeles, gradually building a local following.
The band’s big break came in 2010 with the viral success of their debut single, “Pumped Up Kicks.” The song, with its sunny, laid-back vibe and dark lyrical content addressing youth violence, became an unexpected hit. “Pumped Up Kicks” climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went multi-platinum, propelling Foster the People into the spotlight and earning them a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Riding the wave of that breakout single, the band released their debut album Torches in 2011. The record was both a critical and commercial success, featuring other standout tracks like “Helena Beat,” “Houdini,” and “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls).” Torches showcased the band’s knack for upbeat indie pop anthems with a quirky, electronic edge.
Following their initial success, Foster the People toured extensively and quickly cemented their place in the indie pop landscape. In 2014, they released their sophomore album Supermodel, which marked a more ambitious and introspective direction. While it didn’t replicate the commercial success of Torches, it featured notable songs like “Coming of Age” and “Best Friend.” The album explored deeper themes of consumer culture and personal identity, further establishing the band’s creative range.
In 2017, Foster the People released their third studio album, Sacred Hearts Club, which incorporated psychedelic influences, hip-hop beats, and a more expansive sound. Tracks like “Sit Next to Me” became fan favorites, with “Sit Next to Me” achieving significant success on streaming platforms and radio, proving the band’s staying power in the evolving indie pop scene.
Over the years, the band’s lineup has seen changes. Original bassist Cubbie Fink departed in 2015, but Mark Foster and Mark Pontius remained central to the group’s identity. In 2021, Pontius also left the band to focus on other aspects of life, leaving Foster as the sole original member. Despite the changes, Foster the People has continued releasing new music and touring, with additional musicians joining for live performances and studio sessions.
Today, Foster the People is celebrated for their ability to craft indie pop songs that balance catchy hooks with meaningful commentary, and their music continues to resonate with fans around the world.
