AFC Toronto is a professional women’s soccer club based in Toronto, Ontario, competing in the Northern Super League (NSL), Canada’s premier women’s soccer league. Established on April 26, 2023, by a group of local soccer community members, including CEO Helena Ruken, the club aims to provide a platform for Canadian female athletes to pursue professional soccer careers domestically.
The team’s home matches are held at York Lions Stadium in North York, Ontario, which has a capacity of 4,000 spectators. Notably, AFC Toronto played its inaugural NSL match on April 19, 2025, at BMO Field, drawing a crowd of 14,518 fans.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Marko Milanović, AFC Toronto has assembled a diverse roster featuring both seasoned professionals and emerging talents:
Jade Kovacevic: A prolific striker from Acton, Ontario, Kovacevic is the all-time leading goal scorer in League1 Ontario, with over 170 goals. She has represented Canada at the U17 and U20 levels and has played professionally in Italy and Hungary.
Leah Pais: A dynamic forward from Mississauga, Ontario, Pais has experience playing in NCAA Division I programs and professionally in Iceland. She was named League1 Ontario’s Young Player of the Year in 2019.
Sofia Manner: A Finnish goalkeeper who joined AFC Toronto from Orlando Pride, Manner brings international experience and a strong presence between the posts.
Sierra Cota-Yarde: A goalkeeper from Toronto, Ontario, Cota-Yarde has represented Portugal at the U19, U23, and senior levels.
Emma Regan: A defender from North Vancouver, British Columbia, Regan has played professionally in Denmark and serves as AFC Toronto’s first captain. She has also represented Canada at various youth levels and the senior national team.
AFC Toronto’s establishment and participation in the NSL mark a significant step forward for women’s professional soccer in Canada, providing local talent with opportunities to develop and compete at the highest level within the country.
