Incubus: Alt-Rock Trailblazers with an Evolving Sound

Incubus is an American rock band known for their genre-defying music, introspective lyrics, and ever-evolving sound. Rising from the alt-metal and nu-metal scenes of the late ’90s, Incubus quickly distinguished themselves with a style that blended funk, grunge, hip-hop, and melodic rock—eventually growing into one of the most respected and versatile bands of their generation.

Formed in 1991 in Calabasas, California, Incubus began as a high school project. The founding members were:

  • Brandon Boyd (vocals, percussion)
  • Mike Einziger (guitar)
  • José Pasillas (drums)

Bassist Alex “Dirk Lance” Katunich and turntablist/DJ Gavin “DJ Lyfe” Koppell joined later to round out the early lineup. After releasing a few independent projects and building a local following, the band signed with Epic Records in the mid-1990s.

Their major-label debut, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (1997), put them on the map. The album mixed metal riffs, slap bass, electronic effects, and Boyd’s soaring vocals into a wildly inventive sound. Songs like “Vitamin” and “New Skin” hinted at the band’s potential, while their energetic live shows began to earn them a loyal fanbase.

But it was their third album, Make Yourself (1999), that launched Incubus into the mainstream. With more polished production and accessible songwriting, the record featured several hits, including:

  • “Pardon Me” – A fiery anthem about self-transformation.
  • “Stellar” – A dreamy, romantic track showcasing Boyd’s emotive vocals.
  • “Drive” – Their breakout hit, a melodic acoustic song that topped charts and remains their signature track.

Morning View (2001) followed and solidified their place as alt-rock heavyweights. Recorded in a house on the Malibu coast, the album reflected a more mature, atmospheric sound with standout tracks like:

  • “Wish You Were Here”
  • “Nice to Know You”
  • “Warning”

In 2003, founding bassist Dirk Lance left the group and was replaced by Ben Kenney, formerly of The Roots. Around the same time, DJ Kilmore replaced DJ Lyfe, continuing the band’s transition toward a more experimental and less turntable-heavy sound.

Subsequent albums like A Crow Left of the Murder… (2004) and Light Grenades (2006) showcased their artistic growth and political awareness, with songs like “Megalomaniac”, “Anna Molly”, and “Dig” receiving critical acclaim and commercial success.

In the 2010s, Incubus embraced softer textures and electronic influences on albums like If Not Now, When? (2011) and the EP Trust Fall (Side A). In 2017, they returned with 8, produced in part by Skrillex, which blended old and new elements of their sound, including tracks like “Nimble Bastard” and “Love in a Time of Surveillance.”

Incubus continues to tour and release music, always pushing boundaries while staying grounded in their message of introspection, growth, and human connection. With over three decades of music under their belt, they remain one of alternative rock’s most enduring and innovative acts—proving that evolution is key to longevity.
